Can you believe it? This Friday marks ONE YEAR spent in Texas, one year spent as a full-time musician, and one year where I haven't yet starved to death!

Some stats: in the first 365 days, I played 151 shows at 65 different venues: bars, breweries, farmers markets, old folks homes, and more (almost 400 hours of stage time), driven 13,600+ miles for work (NOT counting the 1850 miles it took to get to Texas), and sweated through and/or broken nearly 120 sets of guitar strings. Had $1000 worth of gear stolen out of my car and replaced it all. Dolly (my ever-intrepid bulldog) and I have moved through four different apartments in two different cities, and even found ourselves a regular trivia team on Monday nights! This summer was the hottest in 15 years, and I never broke down and wore shorts on stage (nor passed out). I've eaten an awful lot of queso and drank (more than) my share of Lone Star.

I've joined and gigged with a band (Pop It! ATX, a multi-genre party/wedding band) as a lead guitarist and vocalist, and founded another one (Kathleen Turner Overdrive, "Songs in the Key of Cusack") which will make its stage debut this weekend. Starting next month, I'm beginning a six-month weekly residency at the venerable Cheatham Street Warehouse, an infamous singer-songwriter stronghold in San Marcos (this is a HUGE honor for a writer, to say nothing of a Yankee).

More importantly, I finally feel like I'm doing what I'm here to do. I come home from playing 6 hours of gigs, fingers aching, and grab a guitar to noodle on while I watch tv anyway. I've increased my songbook for solo shows to over 700 songs, and have a constant running list of 20-30 more to learn as I go. While I haven't been writing anywhere near as much as I would like, what I have written feels (to me) like it's as good as or better than my past work. I struggle with anxiety and depression and poor time management as much as ever, but I wake up every day feeling more purposeful and in my element than I maybe ever have.

I was well into my 30s before I had a day job that paid as much as I grossed in my first year here. Now, that probably says a lot more about the kind of jobs I had than it does about my work here, but. While I wouldn't say I'm stable, or comfortable, or, y'know, prepared for emergencies, I'm doing much, much better than I ever expected my first year as a musician could be.

That said, of course, the world is an expensive place, so I certainly <a contents="wouldn't mind telling y'all about my Patreon, where you could (if you were so inclined) pledge me $1 a month (or $3, or $5, or whatever), and get access to things that the regular plebes don't have (live videos, exclusive covers, whatever else I can think of). If 10% of the people on this email pledge me $3 a month, that'd be half my monthly food budget (for example). I'm sure no one, anywhere, has any money to spare, but if it happened you had a couple bucks, I'd certainly appreciate the support!
All in all, I miss everyone back home terribly, but also for the first time, maybe ever, I feel like I'm doing what my life has been preparing me for. I may never be famous, I may never be wealthy, but I come home at night feeling like I'm using the gifts I've been given to make people happy, and more often than not, it's working. In this modern hellscape, what more can one hope to do?

I promise to try and write (shorter missives) more often...

Loves, Smooches, and Breakfast Tacos,

JH
james hearnetag:jameshearne.com,2005:Post/68246262021-11-29T16:16:46-06:002023-12-10T10:50:57-06:00Seasons Greetings from ATX!
Helloooooooo strangers!

Been a hot minute since I last wrote, so it seems like it was about time to drop y'all a line, let you know how life has been since I up and moved down to Tejas!

In the first two months, I've played 17 gigs at 13 different venues, and have 13 more on the books so far for the next couple months. Not quite at my 15-20 a month goal just yet, but not too shabby a beginning, if I do say so myself. I've been greeted warmly and supported by the lovely people around here, finding a few good open mics and already receiving some referrals! Aside from some asshat stealing some gear out of my car last weekend, really everything professionally is looking up up up!

Creatively, it's been a pretty fallow last couple years (there was a pandemic, don'tcha know, not to mention some personal upheaval, and that has played hell with my mental health and creative drive) but I can feel some ideas starting to try and wrestle themselves out of my tattered brain, so hopefully the (slightly) slower winter season will offer me some space to tease them out a little bit. Nothing would give me greater joy than having a new record to share with y'all, so I just...gotta write it! (and then figure out how to afford to make it, of course, but baby steps, baby steps). I do have a handful of unrecorded tunes, so there's always that, but: feels like it's time for something new.

Austin is a really interesting place. More sprawly than I was expecting, but folks: the breakfast tacos. The BREAKFAST TACOS. The people are kind, far fewer of them Open Carry than I expected (tho admittedly I've mostly only been in Austin, which I'm assured "isn't real Texas"), and even driving outside of ATX I'm pleasantly surprised how few T***p signs I've seen. I've found a bunch of cool bars, great breweries, I can walk to pho for the first time in years... and, well, I regret to inform you that "but it's a dry heat" is a real phenomenon. We'll see how next July strikes me, but even 85 here feels better than 75 in Philadelphia. I've also been struck by the humor in the road signs: "Slow Down: You're Already In Texas, Y'all" pleases me, as did the Thanksgiving weekend's "The Turkey Says: Buckle Buckle". I'm also quite fond of

LITTERING
IS
unlAWFUL

So anyway. I miss you all very terribly, and a special thanks to all who've reached out and stayed in contact: I'm REALLY bad at that, as you no doubt know, but rest assured that you're all in my mind and heart (if not in my text threads) (speaking of which, text me! It's the best way to stay in touch. Don't have my number? Ask!).

I truly hope that each and every one of you has a safe and happy holiday season, that you and yours are getting your vaccines and boosters, that you're all being as kind to each other as you've always been to me. World needs more kindness today than ever.

Loves and Kisses and All the Best Wishes,

JH
james hearnetag:jameshearne.com,2005:Post/48717492017-09-30T10:39:35-05:002017-09-30T10:39:35-05:00JH In October
Hello all!!

It seems that summer's bitter chokehold on us all is finally weakening, and we may have a few weeks of comfortable sweater-and/or-light-jacket weather before the icy cold hand of winter replaces it. I'm an autumn guy, through and through, so the next 4-6 weeks will be my happiest of the year. I don't love winter, but I really, really hate hot weather; little makes me wilt so quickly as 85+ with high humidity. I may as well just be an actual puddle on the sidewalk on days like that. Thankfully, we're getting to "brisk" with a quickness.

I shall, therefore, endeavor to celebrate my favorite season by putting on some great shows (that being just about all I really know how to do)! The major highlight is my return to the beautiful Colony in Woodstock, bring an all-too-rare full-band rock show into that hallowed room, with a special opening performance by my dear friends The Whispering Tree. Tickets are on sale now, and will be less expensive today than they will that day, so get on it!
I'll be chasing it with a solo show at the fabulous HVSS Music Night the following Friday opening for the delightful Sweet Clementines, which should be another can't-miss evening. Not that you should miss ANY of them if you can avoid it...

It's been a hard summer in a lot of ways, but the leaves begin to turn, the temperatures begin to drop, and (for a brief moment) we have the possibility of perfection before the winter comes. I always thought that "leaf-peeping" was ridiculous, until I moved to the Hudson Valley... now I'm that guy doing 35 in a 55 (sorry!), in awe of my surroundings. Just means I need to leave a little earlier to get places...

Shows shows shows! I'll be some places this month:
Sat, Sep 16 - Hudson River Craft Beer Festival, Beacon NY, 12:30 PM
Thu, Sep 21 - Or Gallery & Tavern, Hudson NY, 8PM
Sun, Sep 24 - Skywalk Arts Fest, Catskill NY, 12PM
Fri, Sep 29 - Rock The Gazebo, Tivoli NY, 6PM

Also, looking ahead, I'll be playing my next full-band, full-throated rock extravaganza at the Colony in Woodstock on October 21, with my dear friends, the inimitable Whispering Tree both opening and joining my band! Advance tickets are cheaper than day-of tickets, so you should do that.

Stay frosty, everyone. Miles to go...

I'M SO EXCITED!! Today I finally get to officially announce the record release party for "Through Private Wars" will be held at Colony Woodstock on June 3! This will be a full-band extravaganza, featuring many of the musicians who played on the record with me! The Colony is newly re-opening this weekend, and is a stunningly beautiful room. <a contents="Tickets are onsale now, and are $10 in advance and $12 DOS.
I'll also be hitting NYC next weekend (Map Room @ Bowery Electric, Tuesday May 16, 8PM), doing a quick set at the Woodstock Village Green (Saturday May 27, 1PM), and I'll be hit-and-running as many open mics this month as I can do, so keep your eyes peeled! I have more summer dates lining up, and I'll do an announcement of them in a little while.

Over a year of work, three different studios, ten additional musicians (including an appearance by bass legend Tony Levin!!), and a lifetime of questionable life choices have finally led me here, to this collection. <a contents="The album will be released 6/2 on all major digital marketplaces, and will be available in physical form from me directly. Winter Walk!
Hi there ho there,

You know I don't like to bother y'all too too often, so two quick points and I'm out:

The pre-sale continues for my debut LP! If you don't order your copy by the end of this month, you won't get the early digital release (which will come out weeks, if not MONTHS, before the official release), and you won't have a chance to get any of the fun perks I have for you! Those are ABSOLUTELY only for this pre-order period! I really hate asking for help, but I really need it. In this month of Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for all of you, and especially those of you who've pre-ordered!

Also: I'll be at Steiner Sports on Warren St for this year's Winter Walk in Hudson on December 3, singing my songs, and not my songs, and probably a few holiday-type songs, from 5-8. That's likely to be my last official gig of 2016, so come on by and let me sing to you one more time before this godforsaken year ends!

Loves and smooches and cuddles,

JH
james hearnetag:jameshearne.com,2005:Post/44490902016-11-02T15:00:14-05:002024-03-29T02:11:02-05:00A Supplemental Pre-Sale/Fundraiser
Hey folks,

Won't take much of your time. And if you already pledged to help me make my debut LP, then you can stop reading here knowing I hold you in the highest esteem, and speak your name with warm gratitude.

Otherwise: I'm doing a supplemental pre-sale/fundraiser for this record, because I just don't know how else I'll be able to get it finished. I didn't like asking before, and I don't like asking now, but: I need your help. I'm (nearly if not completely) done with tracking, but there's mixing, mastering, production... solo records are expensive! I've already gone over $3k out of pocket (on top of the nearly $3k pledged before we began), and there's just still quite a hill to climb.

Anyway, please check out my IndieGoGo campaign, and if you were looking forward to this record, maybe you can order it now and help me get it finished!

Love ya lots,

JH
james hearnetag:jameshearne.com,2005:Post/44421712016-10-28T13:18:36-05:002019-08-22T13:48:21-05:00JH in November: News and Notes
Hi there ho there! I have the usual quasi-cold that I get when it's 65 and then 35 and then 65 and then it snows four inches and then it melts in less than 24 hours, and The Better Half and I haven't quite gotten around to fully cleaning up after our housewarming(s), but. I got no particular complaints today.

ON TO THE NEWS!!

Gigs: light this month, just a quick duo next weekend. Hitting up some open mics here and there, but heading into something like hibernation for the winter:
Friday, November 11 - Magpie Bookshop, Catskill NY 7 PM
Saturday, November 12 - Mocha Maya's, Shelburne Falls MA 8 PM

Record: somehow, this beast STILL isn't finished, although aside from (maybe) harmony vocals on one song, and (maybe) re-taking a couple lead vocals, we're DONE WITH TRACKING!! That said, mixing isn't going to happen until probably December, so. Maybe it'll be out in March...? Or April? Rest assured, it's the best thing I've ever put my fingers (or voice) on, and I have at least one guest performer who I've been wanting to have on a record since I was 19, so.

Other Ventures: I'm trying, now, to be more active on my Patreon page: this is a place where you can, if you like, pledge me a dollar (or two, or five, or ten) a month, and I can share otherwise unreleased content (live video, new tunes, etc) with those of you who pledge! I'm trying to drop at least one brand-new tune per month there, as well as whatever else I can find. If you had a dollar (or two, or five, or ten) a month that you weren't using for anything, maybe you can use it for this.

I'm also sharing weekly playlists on Spotify of all the weirdness that gets caught in my brain (or, at least, as much of it as I can catch) on my Facebook Page (as well as the Blog page of this here site). If ever you wanted to know what it sounds like in my head as I wander around the earth, this is as close as you're gonna get (well, maybe you should have a tinnitus ring, too, but I don't know how to replicate that).

Lastly: I'm not gonna go on a big political rant here. Suffice it to say: go vote. It matters who you vote for, and I'm sure you probably know who I'm gonna vote for. But this year, and next year, and the one after that: vote, even if it's not for President. Also, if no one in your town/state/federal government shares your views, then run for office. You probably know better than those clowns.

Cheers, y'all!

JH
james hearnetag:jameshearne.com,2005:Post/43963892016-09-29T14:29:05-05:002022-05-21T06:13:15-05:00JH In October: A Little Quiet(er)
Hey folks,

Fairly quick update today: I'm scaling back on gigs a bit heading into the winter, both because weather gets pretty dicy, and also so that I can keep my head down a little and write and finish up this god-forsaken record (which, truth be told, is coming along beautifully if slowly and which has lots of new tidbits that I wish to tell you about but I can't just yet).

That said, since I go a little nuts if I don't get to make an ass of myself in public now and again, you'll probably see me haunting the open mics in the Greene/Columbia/Ulster/Dutchess County regions...

I AM playing a quick show tomorrow night in Catskill at Magpie Bookshop, opening for Eric & Erica, on tour through the area, so you should be sure to check that if you have the time. Couple more dates on the books further down...

I'm also trying to stretch my internetting a little bit in lieu of not touring as much: I'm continuing to add new content to my Patreon page, where you can give me just a little financial support in exchange for exclusive video/audio/whatever else I get thinking about, and I'm trying to share a weekly playlist of all the weird shit that gets caught in my head on my Facebook page, so you can be sure to check those out.

Other than that: I miss you all, and I love you all, and thank you for all you've given me, and I swear the record (and the fundraiser rewards) is coming as soon as I can make it, and come see me on the interwebs (or at a gig)!!

Friday 9.30 - Magpie Bookshop, Catskill NY, 7 PM
Saturday 10.22 - Hudson Farmer's Market, Hudson NY, 10 AM
Friday 11.11 - Magpie Bookshop, Catskill NY, 7 PM
Saturday 11.12 - Mocha Maya's, Shelburne Falls MA, 7 PM

Lots to get through:

A: The record. I'm headed to the studio tonight for the pentultimate tracking day: after 10PM tonight, two thirds of the songs should be fully tracked (and possibly even mixed). Maybe, maybe, y'all get a sneak peek soon. Maybe. Probably looking at early 2017 for release... stay tuned.

B: Gigs. Kind of a light month, largely as I have a couple trips with The Better Half, and they're the kind where I was informed in no uncertain terms that I would NOT be allowed to gig during them... Happy wife, happy life. But there's a few:
Sat, Sep 3 - Concert on the Green, Woodstock NY, 3PM
Fri, Sep 9 - Chatham Brewing, Chatham NY 8PM
Fri, Sep 30 - Magpie Bookshop, Catskill NY 7PM (short opening set for Eric & Erica (NC))
Fri, Sep 30 - Bella Luna, Saugerties NY 9PM

C: Patreon. So, this is a new thing: Patreon is an online site whereby people (like you!) can pledge small, recurring amounts of money to support creators (like me!), and the creators in turn can share exclusive content. Sort of like a sustainable KickStarter. You pledge $1 a month (or more), you get access to whatever I get into my head to release: new tunes, old tunes, cover tunes, live tunes, video, audio, whatever else I can think of. In todays wintery (at least for musicians) economic climate, this is a new way to try and stay afloat and keep in touch with those of you who believe in me, without whom I'd be nothing (artists are kind of like Tinkerbell that way: if you don't believe in us, and clap for us now and again, we disappear). <a contents="Anyway, I've posted a couple videos and downloadable mp3s already, and I'll be posting more this month and beyond.
D: I'm going to be trying to start something a little fun on my Facebook page, as well. If you haven't already gone and 'Liked' it, you should feel free to do so at your discretion. Keep your eyes peeled.

Hope to see you at the shows (and, those of you who don't live in the Hudson Valley? I'm working on it!!)!!

Miss ya love ya always thinkin' of ya,

JH
james hearnetag:jameshearne.com,2005:Post/43114162016-08-05T10:12:05-05:002021-05-18T00:39:21-05:00JH in August: HUGE PHILLY SHOW!! Other Shows As Well!!
Hi Ho Hi Ho It's Off To Promote I Go...

And a good morning to all of you! I'd like to begin by thanking Magpie Bookshop and the many lovely people who came out to welcome me in my first gig in my new hometown! Went to bed all warm and fuzzy and, admittedly, still a little sweaty. Looking forward to singing to your pretty faces many more times (including at next week's Farmer's Market!).

The BIG news for the month is the ONE NIGHT ONLY REUNION SHOW of THE WAY HOME. For those who came later: The Way Home was the last band I fronted back in Philadelphia, with whom I made this delightful little record more years ago than I find possible (don't have it? Buy it! We can use the money!). Dear friends all, and we spent hours and hours in sweaty rehearsal spaces and cramped vans, taking the gospel according to TWH around the Northeast. But it came to its end, as these things tend to, but we never really got a blowout farewell show. UNTIL NOW. We'll be back, in an ultra-rare five-piece form, opening for our great friends Venice Sunlight's long-awaited record release, and the reunion of ANOTHER of our favorite bands, The New Connection. Doors at 7:30, show at 8 ON THE DOT, we open it up, and you do NOT want to miss this. Tickets are on sale already, and it's not a huge room, so get em now before they sell out!

Got some other shows this month, too, that should not be so loud, but should be a hoot. Incidentally, if you know any one in/near Burlington VT, tell them about my show this Sunday? Because I don't...really...know anyone in/near Burlington VT.

Hope everyone is surviving and staying cool here in my least favorite time of the year! As I'm sure you've all seen, I'm a sweater (thanks, Dad!), so I spend the hot months in basically a constant state of schvitz. The Better Half keeps hinting that we should move to the south. I remind her that she'd be married to a puddle.
Speaking of The Better Half, we just bought a house in Catskill NY, which seems impossible (or at least ill-advised: what idiot at a bank thought I should be given lots and lots of money?!), but is starting to be real in a lovely way: finally a space that is really ours, that we can change and not have to change back, that we get to have and keep and make our lives in. The world is strange and good.

The ever popular #JHDebut update: spent the entirety of my Sunday in the studio, laying in keys with the masterful Kevin Simon, harmony vocals with the incandescent Eleanor Kleiner and Elie Brangbour (better known, perhaps, as The Whispering Tree. Go check their work if you don't know it; I'll wait...), doubling an acoustic guitar track, and replacing a lead vocal with one that's both better sung and includes an improved lyric sheet. Only (I hope) one more tracking session, unless there's two more. Let me tell you how excited I am about this record, and how incredible it's beginning to sound. Scheduling is hard, and records are expensive, but I think this one's gonna be worth it when it's done.

Got lots of shows coming up this month all over the region, so there's probably gonna be one near you (unless you don't live in or adjacent to the Hudson Valley, in which case I might not be getting to you just yet); tell your friends and come on out and let me sing to you! The NYC gig, in particular, is worth note: I'll be doing a special live preview of #JHDebut at one of my favorite rooms in Manhattan; since I don't have a sense of the release date, this is the first chance to get to hear what's gonna be on it, with a special band lineup!

7/16 - Mocha Maya's, Shelburne Falls MA, 8 PM
7/23 - Chalk Festival, New Paltz NY, 5 PM
7/24 - LP1 Preview, Sidewalk Cafe, NYC, 8 PM
7/28 - Dogwood, Beacon NY, 8 PM
7/29 - Chatham Brewing, Chatham NY, 8 PM
7/30 - Kingston Farmer's Market, Kingston NY, 11 AM
7/31 - Hudson Valley Distillers, Clermont NY, 3 PM
8/4 - Magpie Bookshop, Catskill NY, 7 PM
8/7 - Radio Bean, Burlington VT, 7 PM
8/12 - Catskill Farmer's Market, Catskill, 6 PM

See you at the shows!!

It's my birfday, and, while this morning is spent at my day job (boo!), the afternoon and evening will be spent in the studio (yay!) getting one solid day closer to finished with this first LP (DOUBLE YAY!). I suspect at this point we're looking at the fall for the release of this record, possibly even winter (if necessary). Scheduling is hard. I'm hoping maybe to have an advance track or two done sooner than that, though: it's driving me crazy that I can't share it with y'all yet!!

What I CAN share with you, though, is this: I decided this year to take a swing at February Album Writing Month, an online organization that wants you to write 14 songs in 28 (or 29) days in February. I managed 5, which for me is an awful lot to write in a single month (particularly a month in which I was starting to track for the LP); even wilder, all five were actually kinda okay! I have decided, in light of the delay to the record, to release my scratchy, first-time-played demos of these tunes (none of which will be on LP1, but several of which may well be on LP2). Some have already undergone rewrites onstage, others will be rewritten as I go, but: here's some embryonic ideas that you can have. A few of you have already heard these, but for the rest of you: Happy Birthday To Me! They're free if you don't want to pay for them, but I'm making a record and trying to buy a house, so if you DO want to pay for them, I accept.

Beyond that, I'm off-stage until June, but you can find me:

Saturday, June 4 - Catskill Mountain Pizza, Woodstock NY
Sunday, June 5 - Hudson Valley Distillers, Clermont NY
Friday June 10 - Chatham Brewing, Chatham NY
Sunday June 12 - Pianos, NYC

And I'll be playing lead guitar for Thunderbear on Friday, June 17 at Mountain View Studios in Woodstock, so that should be a hoot, too.

Be well, my friends, on this day (the anniversary of my birth) and all the other days, too!

It's Opening Day for my beloved (and bad) Phillies, so of course there's three inches of snow on the ground. Maybe it'll help: maybe the child-like wonder of a spring snowstorm will awaken a passion for the game that will push us through to October! Or maybe we'll lose 95 games this year. Time will tell.

To begin: one year ago today, I took the stage, flanked by several of my very closest friends, in front of many more of my very closest friends, to bid farewell to Philadelphia. The picture above is from that show. I can't say that I've had very many better times on a stage, and I say to all of you: I miss you terribly from here in the (usually) green country! One year on, and it seems like yesterday. Time is funny that way.

Now then: I'm working on this record, maybe I've mentioned it? #JHDebut is maybe halfway through tracking (turns out, getting a busy producer AND a busy engineer AND a busy folksinger in the same room at the same time is harder than it seems), and is sounding AMAZING. I absolutely can't wait for it to be finished so I can share it with you. Truth be told, I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to pay for it all (your generosity in fundraising was astounding, but recording never goes as quickly or as cheaply as you want it to, particularly if you also want it to be good), but there'll be water if God wills it (might help if I believed in God...?). I'm hopeful for a late summer release, but autumn is a possibility.

Moving on: I'm booking booking booking for the next few months; if you want me to come to your town, help me find a decent small venue and maybe a couch to crash on, and I'll do my best! This month, I've got:

Sat 4/9 - Pianos, NYC 7PM
Tue 4/12 - Rosendale Cafe, Rosendale NY 7 PM
Sat 4/23 - Brick House Pub, Housatonic MA 9 PM
Fri 4/29 - HVSS Music Night, Glenford NY 7 PM

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO CONTRIBUTE TO MY DEBUT ALBUM.

The fundraiser ends at midnight tonight, so if you've been meaning to throw some dollars into the pot, PLEASE DO SO TODAY. The length and quality of this record is directly related to the amount of money I have available to spend on it.

Because I'm an idiot, I decided to try and take on the February Album Writing Month challenge, and while I doubt I'll knock out 14 songs this month (what with making an ACTUAL album and whatnot), I have already scratched out 5 songs, and I'm hoping for 3-5 more.

I bring this up because anyone who contributes to the fundraiser (including those who contributed already) will ALSO get a free download of all the songs I finish this month (which I'm terming "the One-Take Bartlet Sessions"), which could also be thought of as an early look at the NEXT record. So maybe that'll sweeten the pot a little.

Please click through the above link and support this fundraiser today. I really need your help to make this dream come to life.

Thanks and loves and smooches,

JH
james hearnetag:jameshearne.com,2005:Post/42902292016-02-12T09:25:00-06:002022-05-11T12:20:58-05:00Fundraiser Update #4: THREE DAYS LEFT!! PLEDGE NOW!!
Hi all,

ONLY THREE DAYS REMAINING TO PRE-ORDER THE DEBUT RECORD!! If you don't make your pledge by the end of the day on MONDAY FEB 15, you'll have to wait until it's released, and your name won't be in the liners, and you won't be able to pledge for any of the nifty packages available. I start tracking NEXT WEEKEND, and I couldn't be more excited. This record can be GREAT if only I can pay for it...

Please, if you can, please, if you would. This record is reliant on you to be as good as it can be.Please contribute now!!

Also, friends in Wilmington and Philly, I'll see you tonight and tomorrow!!
TONIGHT - WCL at the Queen, Wilmington, 7PM
TOMORROW - Connie's Ric Rac, Philadelphia, 8PM

Loves and kisses!!

JH
james hearnetag:jameshearne.com,2005:Post/42902302016-02-05T09:25:00-06:002016-07-22T09:25:22-05:00Fundraiser Update #3: Ten Days To Go!!
Hi there ho there,

So I had a pre-production session last night with the producer of this little shindig, and I have to tell you, I don't think I've ever been this excited. I really can't stress to you enough how great the players I've assembled for this project are, nor how focused we all are on making this a great collection of music, how good I feel about the songwriting going into it (and if you know me at all, you know that THAT is saying quite a lot, as I usually completely mistrust my writing).

At this point, the only thing up in the air is how much record I can afford to make. There are ten days left in my album fundraiser, and I absolutely am over the moon with how much support I've already received, and I absolutely can't sleep with stress about how much further there is to go. Please, please, PLEASE click through this link and pre-order the record, if you would? $10 gets you the record as early as it's completed, $20 gets a signed, hand-numbered CD, and there are other fun packages if you're into it.

I don't suspect I'll have ever kids, and I will never be wealthy. All I can offer the world is my life and my work. I hate hate hate asking, I hate hate hate needing, but my pockets are pretty shallow: I just can't do this without all of you. Please contribute if you can.

Loves and Kisses,

JH
james hearnetag:jameshearne.com,2005:Post/42902312016-01-28T09:30:00-06:002021-10-21T02:26:26-05:00Fundraiser Update #2: I Need Your Help!
Greetings and Salutations!!

Quickly, I have a couple shows to mention (Jan 29 at Last Chance in Tannersville, Feb 5 at the Anchor in Kingston, and I'm making a triumphant-ish return to Wilmington and Philadelphia on Feb 12 and 13 (WCL at the Queen and Connie's Ric Rac, respectively)), but that's not the important thing here.

Friends, I have 18 days left to raise funds to create my first solo record: I'm 33% of the way there, which is absolutely great, but is also 67% of the way not there! I really can't wait to have these songs recorded, and I REALLY can't wait for you to hear them!! But here's the thing: I need to have money enough to pay the peoples to make the musics, so that I can let you hear the musics. So I implore you: if you have ANY INTEREST in ever hearing this record (or any future records of mine, really), PLEASE make a contribution at your earliest convenience, and tell your friends about it as well!

Every contribution of $10 or more comes with a digital copy of the record when it is completed, and it will be released to you weeks before it is released to the world at large. $20 or more gets a physical CD, which will be signed and hand-numbered by yers truly, plus the advance digital copy. There are additional options with swag, house concerts, etc. My personal favorite is the "Cover Video" package (for $75, you get the record (physical and digital), a poster, a t-shirt, a hand-written lyric sheet, AND you get to pick a song, and I'll film myself playing it. You'll get a private link to it, and YOU AND YOU ALONE decide if you want to share it with the world, or if only you ever get to see it). But that's just me.

I couldn't do any of this without you, and frankly, I wouldn't want to. Your support through the years has been essential to me. If you could see fit to offer up just a little bit more support, I'll be ever so grateful. And you'll have a new record from me to enjoy, and to know that it absolutely would not exist without your help.

Thanks for everything always!!

Loves,

JH
james hearnetag:jameshearne.com,2005:Post/42902322016-01-04T09:30:00-06:002022-02-28T01:49:13-06:00Fundraiser Update #1, And Happy New Year!!
Greetings and Salutations, friends!!

Happy 2016!! While I had some wonderful times, and met some wonderful people in 2015, I'll admit to being pretty happy to see that year in the rearview. It was a tough one, and I'm glad to be shut of it. But here we are, reborn with a fresh slate! Let's make it a great one together, yeah?

First, to business: I'm already over 15% of the way to my initial fundraising goal to make my first record, and there's time left for those of you who haven't contributed yet! I remind you: $10 or more gets the record weeks before it's released, $20 or more gets a hand-numbered, signed CD copy, and there are plenty of other cool packages too!! The power to make this record is in YOUR HANDS (or, more accurately, your wallet); please pop over and contribute, and tell your friends to do the same!

While it was uphill, I will say I enjoyed a lot of music last year; while I intend to write about most of these in more depth, here's a bunch of records I recommend from 2015, in no particular order:

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly: just genius level work. Capital-I Important AND bangin', which is a tough combination to pull off. This dude has no ceiling.

Drive-By Truckers - It's Great To Be Alive: an exhaustive, energetic live record from one of America's finest rock band/road warriors. 35 songs, 3+ hours, and it didn't even hit a bunch of my favorites from them.

Kacey Musgraves - Pageant Material: okay, it's a little candy-coated for my tastes, but this record is a country songwriting masterclass. Just hook after hook piled with lyric on top of lyric. Wonderful.

The Lone Bellow - Then Came The Morning: great songs, great harmonies, great production. Good live band, too. This won't be the last we hear of them...

Jason Isbell - Something More Than Free: it's not Southeastern, but nothing is (also: go get Southeastern if you don't have it). Still a great record from one of the best songwriters walking the earth.

The Figgs - Other Planes of Here: hooky powerpop from America's foremost hooky powerpopsmiths, with a surprisingly psychedelic edge. A striking addition to their already-pretty-great formula.

Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit: best title of the year. Songwriting like nobody else on the planet. Guitar chops and hooks for days. Love it.

Father John Misty - I Love You Honeybear: it's not so much that I LIKE this record, per se... but it's not really like anything else out there. Cringeworthy at the same time as it's hilarious. Got a lot of spins as I attempted to figure it out.

My Morning Jacket - The Waterfall: truth be told, I haven't liked an MMJ record since Z, but this one works pretty well for me.

Ryan Adams - 1989: did Ryan Adams NEED to remake Taylor Swift? No. Did it all work? No, not really. But the parts that do ("Out Of the Woods," "All You Had To Do Was Stay" in particular) are spectacular.

Nathanial Rateliff & the Night Sweats - S/T: a new discovery late in the year. Is it a bearded white dude ripping off old Stax records? Yup. But the songs are pretty great, and Stax released it, so... Yay cultural appropriation, he cheered uneasily?

Brandi Carlile - The Firewatcher's Daughter: just lovely. Rootsy and rockin', this one just feels good.

That's all for now, I suppose... Let me know what you were listening to, and go pledge!!

Hugs and smooches,

JH
james hearnetag:jameshearne.com,2005:Post/42902332015-12-17T09:30:00-06:002016-07-22T09:27:32-05:00Debut Solo Record Pre-Sale/Fundraiser
Hello and happy holidays!!

I'm so excited to finally tell y'all, I'm practically fit to burst:

I'm launching the pre-sale/fundraiser to make my first official solo album!!

It's been years in the making; I'm scheduled to begin tracking in February, and I'm hoping for a summer release (though, obviously, we don't want to rush things). I have maybe the best batch of songs I've ever written, I have an absolutely crackerjack lineup of musicians on board, and I can't wait for y'all to hear it! You can go here to find out more information, and to pledge some support if you like!

Every pledge $10 or above gets a digital copy of the record (and long before it's released officially, too), every pledge $20 or above gets a signed, hand-numbered CD copy (on or around the release date), and there are plenty of other great pledge packages too, including limited-edition t-shirts, posters, hand-written lyric sheets, house concerts, and more!!

Feeling generous and in the holiday spirit? Contribute to this fundraiser today! Feeling a little tight, and want to put a couple paychecks between the holidays and you? I'll be running this for all of January and a little bit of February, so kick in when you can! Whether or not you're able to contribute, please share this with your friends (I'm pretty sure they'll like this record too)!!

Your continuing support means the world to me, every day. I couldn't do this without all of you, and even if I could, I don't know that I'd want to. I hope that all of you, and all the people you love, are warm and well this holiday season, and that the year to come is better than the year behind.

Merry Happy Christmahannukwanzakahs,

Hoping y'all are staying cool, unless you're one of those weirdos who likes the heat, in which case I say "THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT."

Anyway:

Coupla shows to report, including my first ever Web Concert!! This upcoming Sunday (8/9), at 5PM EDT, I'll be appearing on your internets to sing some songs and banter awkwardly at a chat window. You should check it out: as it's my first time trying this, it'll be free to stream (though, I do accept tips, hint hint). I'll sing for maybe an hour, maybe more if people are into it, maybe less if they aren't... Some new tunes, some old tunes, some cover tunes, who knows what else... event info on FB(join if you haven't, and share it with your friends), or you can just go here at 5 on Sunday. If your device has the internet, you can hear me sing and watch me struggle to remember lyrics on it.

Additionally, I'll be appearing at my old favorite, Sidewalk Cafe, on the Lower East Side, on Sunday August 23rd; this show is ALSO free, and I ALSO accept tips at it, though it WILL require you to be in Manhattan at the time. I'll likely record that show for possible digital release, so if you want your heckling to be encoded into little parcels of information and float around in a series of tubes until our new alien overlords pull the plug, you should come holler at me.

Also, keep an eye on here: might be something new comin' soon...

Look to the East, at dawn on the fifth day...

A Gig in Rochester!
Hi there ho there cats and kittens!!!

Been a little while since I've written to y'all, hasn't it? Well, after an amazing blow-out party (from which the above picture hails), and the systematic packing and unpacking of my entire life, I'm now settled into my new base of operations in the glorious Hudson Valley! Less than two hours from Manhattan by car, a little over three from Philly, and just under four from Rochester, The Better Half and I are happy as clams, having traded our fear of street crime and collapsing streets for a fear of being eaten by bears or carried off by mosquitos. We've also swapped our scenic vista of "the neighbor's wall" for the ACTUAL scenic vista of "the woods and the mountains". My new day job is for an IT company that is housed, and I'm not making this up, directly across the street from a cow farm. All in all, we're quite pleased.

However, as moving is the most wholly-encompassing and exhausting activities known to man (next to soccer), I've been a little behind the curve on booking emails, and now I only have TWO SHOWS BEFORE SEPTEMBER. This is both unholy and wrong.

That said, the first of them is this coming Saturday, at Nox Cocktails in Rochester NY, and I'm soooper excited. Nox Cocktails is a relatively new establishment, a "nerd pub" in the Village Gate with wild beverages and comfort food, and is owned and operated by an old, dear friend. I couldn't be more proud of James Black and his lovely and talented wife Corrinne for their success, and for whatever reason, they've asked me to caterwaul at their clientele. I'm sure we will all grow to regret this decision shortly. But until then: I start singin' at 9PM, and finish sometime later than that. There is not (to my knowledge) a cover charge.

In August, I'll be in NYC, but we'll talk about that later...

In summary, life is good, country living, music and cocktails, miss ya love ya always thinkin' of ya.

Smooches,
